Are you looking to loose weight, tone your legs, and have fun while doing it? It may sound like a over-inflated rhetorical question, but the truth is that spinning, or indoor cycling, can give you all three of these things. Many people claim that after years of trying different exercises and cardio machines, spinning gives the best results. Why? Because the classes are organized to challenge and push participants while providing a fun and positive environment.

If you are looking to lose weight, there is no better option. Indoor cycling will melt the pounds off. Research has shown that an average 30 minute spinning class will help you burn around 500 calories. I challenge you to equal that efficiency with any of the other advertised "low-impact" exercises. Most other exercises would take at least double the time to burn so many calories. The amount of calories burned can even go higher depending on the intensity of your workout, so push yourself if you can. Indoor cycling is also a great cardio exercise because you can stick with it year round. It is not affected by weather or other adverse conditions you may find when exercising outdoors.

Indoor cycling has many health and fitness benefits, including weight loss, cardiovascular, and muscle building. Many spinners agree that spinning is the best cardio workout you can do. Many spin enthusiast also claim spinning it is the hardest and best workout they have ever found. I would have to agree. There is no other workout that leaves me feeling like I just accomplished a huge feat and went beyond what I thought my body was capable of. And although it is" "hard" in its intensity, it isn't hard for beginners to start. Its also no impact by nature so your feet and knees won't hurt. This makes indoor cycling a great workout for people of all ages, even older adults with joint problems. Spinning even helps increase lung capacity and cardiovascular health. The intense workout gets your heart pumping faster, which is beneficial on many levels. To top it all off, spinning will tone your thighs, calfs, hips, butt, and core. It is especially great for the thighs, and the additional muscle created by indoor cycling will increase your metabolism to burn even more calories. So what are you waiting for? Find an indoor cycling program at your local gym and start melting those pounds away!

I'm a certified Spinning Instructor in New Jersey and I can guarantee anyone who takes my class on the regular and puts forth the effort and I do mean puts forth the effort will routinely burn over a 1,000 calories in my class! Additionally, the music I use may remind you of ' happy hour ' thereby relieving your mind of the challenges my class parcipitates!...Jim

Hello! The calories you burn while exercising in a short time, depends of your physical condition. I love spinning! It is a wonderful, fun and pretty complete thing to practice. If you are totally dedicated to the class, you could burn minimum 500-700 Calories in 30-45 minutes, and over 1000 calories in 90 minutes. My advice is to get music like electronic to follow its time. Now, if you have an instructor in the gym, follow the best you can his/her beat, because he/she tells you how to spin in time to the music. Some people go too slow or without enough intensity. Most of the instructor that I had before used to say that they are like a mirror: his left leg is your right leg and all you have to do is to pedal as fast or slow as he/she does, in that way you can have an excellent work out. It takes a while, but helps a lot. And do not forget the technique!

I have been spinning for about two months now and I am happy to say that i have lost about 20lbs. I am totally dedicated to the class and I go everyday. I tried other routines and nothing was as effective as spinning. Keep in mind though that I follow my instructur and I have a high tolerance level. I go all out in every class. I always make every secound count. I hope that in a few more months I will be in my ideal weight.

General statements such as "research has shown" need more validation.
What research?  What is "an average 30 minute cycling class"?
This isn't an article, so much as an opinion piece.  Far too general.

There's a lot of BS in here. I'm a relatively strong amateur cyclist (I do 4000 foot climbs and 80 mile rides at altitude). A huge and exhausting 45 minute workout for me on the spinner -- going as hard as I possibly can -- burns 600 calories according to the machine. This stuff about novices burning 500-700 calories or more in 30-45 minutes is pure baloney.

I agree with this comment - using the body bugg system, which accurately shows calories burned, I am at 240 and only burn about 400 cal. in a 45 min class...going hardcore. I know one of these thin or average folks won't burn nearly as many.

Hello Glenn, you probably ride hills well because your body weight is low and you don't have to put out as much power to climb faster than someone else. I know for a fact that there are people in my spin class who weigh more than me and put out more power than me too, hence burning more calories. On a real bike on the road, chances are that I would be faster than them since it comes down to power, weight and wind resistance.

So, to all you amateurs and novices, if you really push yourself, it is indeed possible to burn a lot of calories on a spin bike. Don't be disheartened by 'semi-elite' athletes with an attitude. Everyone's goal should be to do what's best for them, and spinning is an effective and less injury-prone way to lose a lot of weight. However, do remember that you have to push yourself. If your relative exertion level feels comparable to walking, you are leisurely spinning. It should feel comparable to jogging at a good pace.

I have been doing spinning for two weeks now and have a polar calories watch the first week for 45m class was 230calories and this thursday was 285 my highest yet. I dont know where this figure of 500 -600 + comes from.... ??? I am staggered - I surely dont burn that much and would be interested to know just HOW it is done! my teacher works her butt off and i sweat too.... really couldnt work any harder. The first week my left hip hurt this morning my left knee hurts!! either some one is telling porkies or they got their figures wrong!!

Spinning has helped me a lot, I'm pear shaped, and the hip area is the only part of my body I struggle to tone. I started spinning this year March and there's a huge difference. I always recommend to all my friends....

There is 3500 calories in 1 pound of human fat. I just worked that out and I thought I'd share it with you all.

General Knowledge

3500 calories in 1 pound of human fat

14 Pounds in 1 Stone (or 6.35KG)

ME

I am a man who weighs 10.5 stones / 66.7 kg / 147 pounds for a whole year while consistantly eating 2416 calories a day.

Based on the healthy BMI recommendation, my recommended weight is 111.2 lbs - 150.2 lbs. I'm a 5' 5" man... not the other way around. I'm not happy with the weight around my waist, though you would think it looks normal - I do not like it.

I need to eat 1916 calories a day or burn 3500 a week to lose one pound.

That is burning 500 calories a day.

Now for you....

The sum here is to take the total number of calories per week that YOU consistantly consume and MULTIPLY it by 7 DAYS = "_____?"

SUBTRACT 3500 calories (a pound) from that big number "_____?"and that is how much you should consume per week to lose a pound.

Then you take the same "_____?" and DIVIDE it by 7 to find out how much you consume per day.

1 teaspoon of butter is 100 calories, so all the 'tiny' cakes you eat do equal weight!

Another thing you have to realise is that if you have no muscle, you WILL as a result of exercising GAIN more muscle, and this will mean that the weight you lose won't automatically show. This is because muscle weighs more in proportion than fat.

Also you need to consider how many calories you naturally burn per minute.

Because to simply burn of the fat you need hydration and energy. If you do not get these you are setting yourself up to fail. The body can only take and produce so much as what you put in.

Always consult a professional along every step of the way.

A lot of these articles I keep reading on Spinning they miss the big component comparing it to regular biking. For one you are not carrying around your own mass, when you bike or cycle you carry around your own mass. When you spin your are carrying around nothing, there is a big difference of how much you burn when you are actually carrying your own mass.

Average ride for me is 15 miles mountain biking average speed 12-15 mph calorie burn 800-850 depending on hills etc. At 255 pnds
